Waves have a hypnotic quality - a little like a flickering flame or the rhythm of railway carriage wheels on an unwelded track - a predictable but never identical pattern that lulls and soothes, like a mother’s heartbeat to an unborn baby. Sitting watching breaking waves can be soothing or exhilarating, and a great way to relieve stress if you can let your thoughts flow and dissolve like the foam that swirls so purposefully up the beach then sighs away to nothing but damp sand.  It is in times like this, with the brain idling in neutral, that the mind can be at its most creative - imagination flowing like coloured ink dripped into water because it is unrestricted and unforced. Such times are incredibly special and valuable, especially in such a noisy and increasingly digitalised world.
