Painting No. 130
The steep, rocky “tourist route” up Ben Hope, which at 3040ft (927m) is the most northerly Munro, climbs alongside the delightful cascades and pools of Alt a’ Mhuseil. The rowan-flanked waterfalls do a great deal to take your mind off the steepness of the climb, and the clear peaty waters provide a delicious cold drink that refreshes and invigorates before the toil of the dry, stony summit slopes looming formidably ahead. Yet I have seen folk sitting beside a stream like this drinking expensive luke-warm “spring” water from a plastic bottle! It is symbolic of a lifestyle today that prefers to be sold a synthetic and costly version of reality rather than actually experiencing it. This is a beautiful and amazing world. Let’s live in it - touch it, smell it, see it, breathe it - rather than just experimenting with a virtual version of it through LCD screens and pre-packaged, sanitised substitutes.
