- Alt a’ Chalbheich Coire, stream on Ben Loyal -

Painting No. 131

This carefree stream plunges steeply down the western flank of 2504ft (765m) Ben Loyal, cascading from the large central corrie down grassy slopes to the birch woods below.  If you have a steady head and good boots, the steep slopes to either side provide a vertiginous but rock-free route to the top, but don’t slip or you’ll end up bruised in an icy bath!  Those clear chilly waters are, however, wonderful for bathing tired feet, and provide a delicious and refreshing drink.  Yet I have seen folk sitting beside a stream like this drinking expensive luke-warm “spring” water from a plastic bottle!  It is symbolic of a lifestyle today that prefers to be sold a synthetic and costly version of reality rather than actually experiencing it.  This is a beautiful and amazing world. Let’s live in it - touch it, smell it, see it, breathe it - rather than just experimenting with a virtual version of reality through LCD screens and pre-packaged, sanitised substitutes.
