Four seasons in one day? Yes - especially in northern Scotland! On this February day, however, a fierce squall brought 4 seasons in just one hour upon Ben Loyal: sunshine, rain, sleet, then snow. And this climatological variety is mirrored in the variety of views of Ben Loyal when seen from different directions. From this side, the south, Ben Loyal conceals the pendant ridges that grace its northern aspect, and assumes the form of a high dome surrounded by smaller outlying cones. From this side, also, the greatest single cliff on Ben Loyal is disclosed: a grey syenite slab that descends 130 metres from the western ridge of Sgor a Chleirich to the narrow waters of secluded Loch Fhionnaich. From north, south, east or west, Ben Loyal presents a startlingly different appearance, yet it is the same remarkable mountain. It is well to remember that many human situations can have a similarly elastic appearance, depending upon the situation and experience of the viewer.
